Stock Notation


The oxidation number state of a metal in a compound is sometimes presented according to the notation given by German chemist, Alfred Stock. It is popularly known as Stock notation.

 

 

Nomenclature of Metal Compounds

Stock notation method is used in type of metals which have more than one oxidation states.

Generally stock notation is used for metals but not for non metals.

Equation of Redox Reaction

General rules must be obeyed while showing redox reaction equation:

The molecular formulas of reactants and products must be known.

All the electrons released during oxidation half reaction, should be used in the reduction half reaction that is, change of electron in the reaction, should be the same.

The law of conservation of mass must be obeyed. The number of atoms or elements on both the sides of equation should be the same.

Equation of Redox Reaction

General rules must be obeyed while showing redox reaction equation:

For reactions in acidic medium the requirement of oxygen is fulfilled by using H2O   and using H+ for hydrogen.

In basic medium the requirement of oxygen is fulfilled by H2O and OH- ions are used to fulfill requirement of hydrogen.
